What am I doing here?

Fair question! I’d say I’m trying, and largely failing given the sparseness of the posts, to write about whatever feels worthwhile. I’ll put whatever I put. Most will languish in drafts. The idea from my end is just that if I feel I’m writing for an audience I will write with more precision and care.

What is a Tum Tum Tree?

Now that’s a great question! In Lewis Carrol’s poem “Jabberwocky” the Tum Tum Tree is where the protagonist stops to rest before his climactic duel with the titular beast. Though, notably, Carroll’s protagonist stands in “uffish” thought.1 I aim generally for ufflessness, and by-and-large I hope my thoughts here will be genial.

Carrol later defined uffish as denoting “a state of mind when the voice is gruffish, the manner roughish, and the temper huffish.”

So rested he by the Tumtum tree // And stood a while in thought.
